Philanthropy Australia has spent the last year telling stories of inspiring giving, and hooked me in to help with the storytelling. I’ve loved it, meeting all kinds of not-for-profit sector leaders and philanthropists, and crafting amazing tales of charitable giving and the great work it leads to.
In the most recent batch, I was asked to tell stories of where First Nations NFPs are making a difference, and a brilliant yarn was the one about Tony Wilton, a successful entrepreneur and proud Nhanda man who has returned to his ancestral homeland at Kalbarri, Western Australia.
With the assistance of a local NFP, the Tourism Western Australia (ATWA), Tony was supported as he took over the cafe adjoining the spectacular Murchison Gorge skywalk, and he is now using the cafe space to tell the story of his people, their history and traditions, as well as dishing out coffee to tourists.
My favourite quote was when Tony talked about where he now lived, saying: “I wake up in the morning on our property, it overlooks Kalbarri and it looks out over the hills of the ancestors, and I can get up and have a coffee, walk out on to our veranda and just be there and commune. I’ve never really gotten into contact with that part of myself before or been able to share it with Ann (Tony’s wife).”
