Asst Comm Doug Fryer

Victoria Police Assistant Commissioner Doug Fryer is the state’s top cop when it comes to road traffic, so I interviewed him as part of RACV’s ongoing and award-winning ‘Impact’ campaign.

‘We have, every year in Victoria, an average of 58 homicides,’ he told me. ‘And every time we have one, the community is outraged. But, for me, the community complacency and acceptance of 250 road deaths a year is concerning. One of the challenges for me, and the road safety partners, is how do we get into the minds of the four and a half million drivers or riders who are registered to drive, that road trauma happens to them?’

Doug Fryer is passionate, eloquent and extremely knowledgeable about every aspect of the road system, driving behaviour and why crashes happen. He was a fascinating interview.
