Trent McGaffin

Trent McGaffin was in an induced coma when we met, but we got to know each other well in the year or so since. Trent had the misfortune to collide with a ute and come off his motorbike, receiving severe injuries, as I was working on what would become the Quill Award-winning ‘Impact’ series for RACV’s Royal Auto magazine and website (working closely with editor Seamus Bradley, photographer Meredith O’Shea, who took the featured image on this page, and videographer Miguel Rios.)

Some stories aren’t ones where you walk in, fill a notebook and walk back out. Trent and I have spent hours chatting about life, shattered legs, ice hockey, horses, motorbikes, family, and everything in between. He’s finally starting to recover, more than a year later, but I remain grateful for how generous and honest the then-19-year-old was with us, during such a traumatic time in his life.
